Welcome to the Fenner School of Environment and Society, a world-class, nationally-distinctive School at the ANU for interdisciplinary research and education on complex environment-society systems.

Never before have major environmental issues, such as water, energy, drought, climate change, urban sustainability, fires, biodiversity loss and revegetation, been as prominent in Australia and internationally as they are now. Addressing these issues demands an approach that cuts across the traditional disciplinary divides between the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences.

The Fenner School was formed in 2007 incorporating the former Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies (CRES) and the School of Resources, Environment and Society (SRES). There is nowhere else in Australia - and very few places in the world - where economists and hydrologists, historians and ecologists, political scientists and climatologists work together side-by-side, day-by-day in an integrated fashion.

With over 50 academic staff, more than a hundred PhD students and a full complement of support staff and services, the School represents a major location of scholarship in integrated environmental research and training. Through close links to other ANU schools, research organisations elsewhere and to the policy community, we bring a powerful and flexible array of skills and perspectives to bear on existing and emerging challenges. Our coursework education programs at undergraduate and graduate level are designed to produce the vitally needed next generation of researchers and professionals.

Whether you are interested in studying at the Fenner School, joining us as a research colleague, learning more about the relevance of our work for policy and management, or simply curious about the great environment and sustainability issues of our times, the information on these pages should help you learn more about what we do, how we do it, and how you can become involved with our exciting endeavour.

Professor Stephen (Steve) Dovers
