PhD researcher Kate Grarock from the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU is investigating the impact of the Indian Myna bird on native bird life in the ACT region.
The popular Australian Forest History Series is now available online at Fenner School of Environment and Society. A series of books reporting on research and writing on Aboriginal burning, the ancient pollen record, landscape formation, regeneration and grazing, forest management, the resurgence of koalas, microscopic secrets in the wood, heritage surveys and much more.
Boom and Bust: Bird Stories for a Dry Country , co-edited by ANU researchers and featuring many contributions from ANU, has won the Whitley Medal, the nation’s most prestigious award for zoological publications. It was co-edited by Libby Robin, Rob Heinsohn of Fenner School of Environment and Society, and Leo Joseph of CSIRO. 
15 Sept 2009. Three of the 14 awards granted Australia wide were to a Fenner School of Environment and Society staff member and two Fenner School alumni. Congratulations to Lyndall Bull, Ana Rubio-Zuazo and Mira Durr on winning the 2009 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

The Seventh Jack Westoby Lecture was hosted on 26 Aug 2009 by Fenner School of Environment & Society.

Australian birds have dwindled in size over the last 100 years and climate change appears to be to blame, say researchers from ANU and CSIRO. The research team included Associate Professor Robert Heinsohn at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU.
Professor Nicholas Glasgow has accepted a sponsored weight-loss challenge to raise funds for Reconciliation Scholarships from Prof. Keith Houghton, who himself raised nearly $200k for this cause last year. Students and staff are encouraged to help make a difference!
A new and original book from the PhD thesis of former Fenner School PhD scholar, Dr Jess Weir has been published by AIATSIS. The book, Murray River Country: An ecological dialogue with traditional owners was launched at the 2009 Melbourne Writers Festival. 
This recently released report was written for the Federal Government by a team of eight experts led by Prof. Will Steffen, Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute and including Prof. David Lindenmayer and Prof. Pat Werner of the Fenner School of Environment and Society.
Dr Frank Mills, jointly with The Fenner School of Environment & Society and The Research School of Physics & Engineering is developing models of atmospheric processes on Venus that will help make predictions about climate change on Earth.
“Booderee National Park is a wonderful natural laboratory for studying fire and nature,” says Professor Lindenmayer. “We work closely with the park managers and I believe our research is helping them in their day-to-day management roles as well as creating an important and lasting scientific legacy on how to best work with fire in Australia’s varied landscapes.”
Scientists from the Australian National University and Rutgers University have created the first continuous deep ocean temperature record for the last 3.2 million years, shedding new light on the nature of Earth’s past ice ages.
Congratulations to Catherine Gross of the Fenner School of Environment and Society on winning a prize worth $500 for the best paper at the 2009 Australian National Postgraduate Law Conference, Law and Change. Her paper was titled 'Listening for a change? Perceptions of injustice in water distribution decisions'.
The ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment sponsored the first in a series of Charles Darwin Bicentenary Symposia, entitled Human Genetics and Evolution on Tuesday 7 April 2009, featuring both national and international experts in the field. Presentations from the event are now available.
The ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment held a General Forum on Wednesday 15 July 2009. Its aim was to introduce Professor Andrew Cockburn as the new College Director, inform of the College Research Strategic Plan, and to provide information concerning the new University IAS model. Professor Cockburn's presentation is now available.
The latest research results on climate change was tabled at the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels on 18 June 2009. The 36 page report comes directly out of the major international scientific congress Climate change: Global Risks, Challenges & Decisions that ANU jointly organised in Copenhagen in March.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb and ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope have turned the first sod at the site of the new building that will house the ANU Climate Change Institute. The ACT Govt has pledged to contribute $2.5M towards the $8.1M building that will be also house parts of the Fenner School of Environment and Society.
Four students from the Fenner School were sponsored to attend the inaugural spatial@gov conference held in Canberra. The conference was a new initiative organised by the Australian Government Office of Spatial Data Management.
The final gate that will secure the predator proof fence at Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve has been locked into place. Dr Adrian Manning, Research Fellow at Fenner School of Environment and Society and research manager on the project says, "With the exclusion of feral pests that threatened native fauna we will be able to reintroduce locally extinct species." 
Australia’s temperate grazing region is facing a tree regeneration crisis, with a new research project based at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU, suggesting that millions of hectares could be treeless within decades.
Australia has the world’s most carbon-dense forest in the Central Highlands of Victoria, according to researchers Professor Brendan Mackey, Professor David Lindenmayer and Dr Heather Keith of the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU.
Researchers including Dr Paul Tregoning of the Research School of Earth Sciences at ANU have shown using satellite data that the Murray-Darling Basin has lost 200 cubic kilometres of water over the last six years – the equivalent of 400 Sydney Harbours.

Congratulations to Professor Marilyn Ball who has recently been elected to the Australian Academy of Science. Distinguished for her work on plant physiology: stress tolerance in plants and their ability to function in complex, highly variable environments. Marilyn is the head of Ecosystem Dynamics at the Research School of Biological Sciences. We congratulate her for this well deserved recognition!

Each chapter includes ten key issues that must be urgently addressed to improve Australia's environment.

The Centre is a joint venture over 5 years involving ~20 organisations, including ANU. For ANU and the Fenner School, the establishment of this Centre is expected to generate 3-4 new positions...

The award is to support a PhD student undertaking research in the field of the physical or biological sciences in the alpine and sub-alpine areas of Kosciuszko National Park, or in/ partly in, other alpine/sub-alpine areas of Australia.
The environment matters to everyone: not just for the quality of life, but for life itself. Staff and students at ANU are working across the breadth of environment challenges, from climate change to water resources, in both rural and urban systems, and around Australia and internationally. To support this work, new scholarships are available for environment students in 2009.
The recent announcement of grant successes for ARC Discovery ($21M), ARC LIEF ($4M), Linkage International ($200K), Linkage ($2.6M) and NHMRC Project Grants ($4.5M) and Research Fellowship schemes has seen CMBE and CPS combined win over $32M in new research funding for the next 3-5 years. Congratulations to all grant recipients!
