FOR INFORMATION

Youth Decide - vote for a safe climate.

Union Court and online till Friday

Until the end of this week (14-18 Sept) ANU students are holding an event at Union Court that is part of Australia's first national youth vote on Australia's climate future. We want to make sure the voice of Fenner students count. 300 events are being held around Australia - in schools, universities, public places and workplaces. A team of 20 young people including ANU student Charlie Wood, will present the results of this vote to the United Nations climate change negotiations in Copenhagen this December. The results will also be presented (immediately following the vote) to the Australian Government and to the United Nations climate week in New York.

Please encourage your students (and kids) to attend in the final 3 days if they haven't done so already. Voting is open 11-3 at union court or online at www.youthdecide.com.au. Posters/blurbs etc can be emailed - contact Nicky. Nicky.Moffat@anu.edu.au

There are some great vids online (website above -or email Nicky) if you're looking for some younguns' stories to give you hope and inspiration!

ANU Fenner School of Environment & Society, and Friends of Grasslands volunteer bush (grassy ecosystem) regeneration

Saturday 19th September 2009, 9 am to 4 pm, Yarramundi Reach, Canberra

Fenner School & Friends of Grasslands second work party to weed this significant grassland site. Our work on the site earlier in the year has encouraged the National Capital Authority to invest in a management plan and other conservation measures. The site is looking better and the weeds are easier to see, so we hope to eliminate remaining woody weeds, Chilean Needle Grass and St Johns Wort in the best habitat areas.

There will be a free BBQ (with halal and vegetarian food). To register contact Jamie Pittock: jamie.pittock@anu.edu.au or phone 02 6125 6142.

Further work parties are planned at Stirling Ridge on 17 October and 5 December, as well as a nature walk on 21 November with local expert, Adam Muyt.

On Friday 11 September

Fenner CERF project team presented a BRS Seminar "Sustainable Farms project: Transdisciplinary research for sustainable grazing in the Lachlan River catchment, NSW", by Joern Fischer, Kate Sherren, Helena Clayton, Jacki Schirmer, Richard Price and Steve Dovers. This week, Steve will present a summary report to the annual Commonwealth Environmental Research Facilities conference in Canberra, at which he will also deliver the after dinner address on problems in the relationship between research and policy.
