Trade, environment & climate change policy

Australia and the European Union, on 28 August 2012, agreed to create the world’s largest Emission Trading Scheme through the establishment of a full two-way link between the Australian and European schemes by 2018. I am looking at two aspects of this agreement in my Honours thesis:

  • What impact will this agreement have on merchandise trade between Australia and Europe; researching specifically trade-exposed industries as identified by the Australian Government and European Commission
  • What regulatory divergences currently exist between the two systems and do these need to be overcome.
