Conservation in urban landscapes: planning and management of habitat for threatened woodland birds in the Molonglo Valley, ACTThe Molonglo Valley is planned as the next area for major suburban development in the ACT. The PhD research will investigate patterns of landscape use by birds before development occurs, with a particular focus on threatened woodland species. The project provides a unique opportunity to undertake ecological research before major landscape change, to explore the applicability of landscape ecology theories in urban and peri-urban settings and to use results to generate alternative planning scenarios. The overall aim will be to provide planners and policy-makers with sound whole-of-landscape scientific evidence on which to base planning and conservation management policies. An attractive scholarship is available, jointly funded by The Fenner School of Environment and Society and the ACT Government (Parks, Conservation and Lands). The successful candidate will have a background and interest in conservation biology, restoration ecology and landscape ecology and enthusiasm for ecological fieldwork.
