ABOUT THE DEGREES

The Master of Environment (M Env), Graduate Diploma (GD Env) and Graduate Certificate in Environment (GC Env) are flexible interdisciplinary degrees by coursework and research, focused on environment and sustainability. Each degree has a core which addresses the different components of sustainability, and major specialisation component so that programs can be structured to meet individual interests. Specialisations also develop students’ analytical and communication skills through independent research for a major essay or sub-thesis. Many courses can be taken in intensive mode.

ANU has nationally- and internationally- distinctive research and teaching in environment and sustainability, and offers an integrated suite of undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral programs. Postgraduate environment student can follow a direct pathway from the GC Env to GD Env and M Env. For example, the GC Env provides a flexible structure for those graduate students who wish only to access a limited number of courses, and an entry point for the more advanced coursework degree.

WHO SHOULD DO THE DEGREE?

Environment and sustainability issues are becoming increasingly important. Students and professionals who wish to advance their knowledge and skills in these areas will benefit from world leading environmental research and teaching at the ANU. They will go on to careers in environmental management, policy development and/or research. The degree should advantage staff from federal and state government agencies, local government, NGOs and statutory environmental management organisations, as well as consultants.

WHAT DOES THE DEGREE OFFER?

Graduates can expect to:

  • gain both a broad knowledge base about contemporary issues and challenges in environment and sustainability science, and a high level of knowledge in a specialisation reflecting their interests;
  • develop their independent learning, and analytical, research, teamwork, oral and written communication skills;
  • have better developed networks relevant to their academic and professional interests; and
  • consequently be better placed to respond to the challenges of environment and sustainability through their chosen careers.
