Why a BSc(REM)?

A common theme among many students electing to study for a BSc (REM) is that they want to make a real difference to the world. They’re talented, eager, and looking for a career that’s both challenging and rewarding. Experience has shown that our graduates get what they aim for. Past graduates are now employed across the whole spectrum of environmental management including: AusAID, CSIRO, Greening Australia, Landcare, national parks, environmental, rural and planning consultancies and at all levels of government.

The Degree

ANU offers a three year Bachelor of Science in Resource and Environmental Management – BSc (REM). This degree provides a strong background in natural resource sciences and management that will prepare you for a wide variety of careers (see specialisations below). To earn a BSc (REM) you will need to complete a number of core units (see overleaf for details). This is the base on which you can build your own stream or streams of interest. The degree is structured to allow you to branch out in many directions in second and third year. It is recommended you discuss your specific selections with course conveners and consult the ANU Undergraduate Handbook.

Possible Specialisations

Here are some examples of the careers you could aim at with a BSc (REM); there are many other streams you could select:

  • Biogeography and ecology
  • Catchment management
  • Environmental policy and planning
  • Environmental data collection
  • Farm forestry
  • Fire management
  • Geographic information systems
  • International development
  • Landscape evolution and management
  • Natural resource economics
  • Sustainable soil management
  • Wildlife and habitat management.

New Joint Science/Law Degree

Bachelor of Science in Resource and Environmental Management / Bachelor of Laws (BScREM / LLB). Our five year program links these two complementary degrees, and is well suited for students wanting to develop careers in the emerging fields of environmental regulation.

Degree Requirements

A BSc (REM) requires completion of 24 courses: eight courses per year for three years. Of those 24 courses, seven must be selected from a pool of 14 core courses. You choose the remainder. Some of these may come from Science or from outside the Faculty. For a complete set of rules of what units you can select, see the ANU Undergraduate Handbook.

REM Streams

A BSc(REM) allows you to specialise in many career focused streams. An additional Honours year is available in all streams.

Honours in REM

ANU REM has a strong Honours program. Most Honours projects are conducted in partnerships with researchers in other organisations, and are undertaken in your fourth year. Contact the Fenner School Honours co-ordinator (fennerschool-hpc@anu.edu.au) about Honours in REM.

Scholarships are available for many Honours projects. See our yearbook for more information.
