I recently graduated with a Masters of Environment (Research) from the Fenner School of Environment and Society in 2015. Prior to my Masters degree I enjoyed 12 years of experience in wildlife research across academic, government, and NGOs in the USA, Caribbean, Saudi Arabia and Australia. My PhD (2016-present) at the Fenner School is using applied geography and GIS tools to conduct combined mapping of social-ecological values across the freshwater to marine spectrum of a catchment. 

Research interests

My research explores how the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems are affected by shifts in environmental conditions, habitat loss, and social intervention. Some recent examples include investigations of the consequences of habitat change for fish assemblages within marine protected areas (e.g., Noble et al., 2013), the response of coral reef fishes to rapid environmental change (e.g., Noble et al., 2014), and the potential for climate-mediated shifts in marine recruitment on rocky shores (e.g., Menge et al., 2011). Most recently, my Masters research explored the ecological and social dimensions to the conservation of the threatened Murray crayfish (Euastacus armatus) in upland streams (e.g., Noble and Fulton, 2016), with a particular focus on Indigenous management and connections to freshwater species. 

My current PhD research with Dr. Bruce Doran is developing tools for exploring trade-offs in spatial management that balance both ecological and social values within aquatic ecosystems. Using an applied geography approach based in GISc, I am working to intertwine current understandings around biophysical relationships between key aquatic species and their environments (i.e., ecological patterns of occurrence), with the relationships and values that humans place on their aquatic ecosystems. Ultimately, this combined social-ecological approach should allow us to develop balanced spatial management solutions that avoid potential conflict between humans and biodiversity conservation.
