Reaching 100% electric vehicle sales: electric vehicle buyers, the role of infrastructure, and the importance of supply policies

Zero emission vehicle (ZEV) sales in California reached 25% of new vehicle sales in 2023, these sales must continue to 100% ZEV sales by 2035 to meet ZEV sales targets and California’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2045. In this seminar we will consider behavioural and policy related aspects of the transition to ZEVs. We will present research on heterogeneity among electric vehicle buyers, pathways to 100% ZEV adoption, the role of infrastructure in encouraging ZEV sales, and the importance of vehicle supply policy in ensuring ZEVs are available for consumers to purchase.

About the Speakers

Gil Tal is an Associate Adjunct Professor, Director of the Electric Vehicle Research Center and Sustainable Transportation Energy Pathways (STEPS+) program, and Research Director of The China Center for Energy and Transportation. Dr. Tal's research focuses on electric vehicle policy, travel behaviour, and EV supply chain dynamics. His expertise encompasses various segments of the electric vehicle market, including light duty, heavy duty, and transit sectors and studying the impact of incentives and infrastructure in the global electric vehicle market. Gil holds a PhD in Transportation Technology and Policy.

 

Alan Jenn is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at UC Davis, and a researcher at the Electric Vehicle Research Center. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a PhD in the department of Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) and has undergraduate degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology, Music, and Energy and Resources from the University of California, Berkeley. Alan’s research is focused on plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs): integration with the electric grid, adoption of the technology, use in ride-hailing companies (such as Uber and Lyft), and its impact on transportation finance.

 

Scott Hardman is Associate Research Faculty and Assistant Director of the Electric Vehicle Research Center in the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California Davis. He is a behavioural researcher focused on policy, electric vehicles, and automated vehicles. Scott holds a PhD in Hydrogen Fuel Cells and their Applications from the University of Birmingham. He chairs the International EV Policy Council.
