Applications for the Lesslie Fellow are now open
At the Fenner School of Environment & Society, we recognise that environmental challenges are not only technical, they are also social. Solutions need to connect knowledge with community and analysis with action. With this in mind, we are pleased to launch the Lesslie Fellowship: an opportunity for an early-career researcher to engage in applied work shaped by real challenges for land, culture and sustainability, for the benefit of Indigenous Australians.
The Lesslie Fellowship invites an early-career researcher to work at the intersection of environment, community and policy. Guided by the legacy of Rob Lesslie, this role offers a three-year opportunity to lead applied research, collaborate with community, and educate the next environmental scholars.
The Fellow will:
- conduct applied research in land and cultural resources
- engage with communities, Indigenous partners, and decision makers
- contribute to teaching and mentoring, where this supports the career development of the successful candidate
- help connect environmental science with real-world decisions
If you are an early-career researcher with experience working with Indigenous organisations, who wants to work across disciplines, connect evidence with action, and support the next generation of environmental thinkers, we encourage you to apply.

If you have questions, please contact our director, Prof. Saul Cunningham here.
Note that this fellowship is open to applicants who do not have a PhD, but instead have experience and professional standing demonstrated through sustained applied outcomes from collaboration with an Indigenous organisation.
