Early voting starts begins today in the crucial Eden-Monaro federal by-election and one of the dividing issues for the electorate is what to do about the feral brumbies that roam the iconic Kosciusko National Park.

Two years ago today, the NSW State Government effectively made the wild horses a protected species.

But a Coalition of scientists, farmers and environment groups is now calling for candidates to take action, amid signs that horse numbers are booming, and causing significant ecological damage.

Professor Jamie Pittock spoke to ABC Radio National.
