Canberra is usually a pristine city. Its skies are so clear that many of Australia's top astronomy sites are either in the ACT or nearby. Yet for two weeks over the holiday period, the national capital has had some of the world's worst recorded air quality.

Former meteorologist and honorary lecturer Dr Clem Davis told the ABC that hot air acts like a lid and traps everything below the inversion, and the pollution from the bushfires nearby is stuck.
