About
Peter Wright is an experienced environmental policy reform specialist with a particular interest in biodiversity conservation. He has worked in both operational and strategic policy roles in Commonwealth, state and territory government agencies, as a biodiversity campaigner in the non-government sector and as a Ministerial policy advisor.
Peter has contributed to state and Commonwealth reforms in biodiversity policy, public land management and catchment management. He has developed management protocols for controversial threatened species such as the Koala and the Grey-headed flying-fox. Peter’s NGO campaigns included the Regional Forest Agreements as well as land clearing and water reforms in NSW.
Peter’s PhD research will apply social science research to understand how improved governance can contribute to solving biodiversity decline. It will focus on the roles of the Australian Government and non-state actors in the governance framework and seek to understand how a staged approach to governance reforms could serve as a pragmatic way forward. The governance of Australia’s national biodiversity strategy is of particular interest in this project.
