About
Dr. Sombol Mokhles is a Laureate Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Fenner School of Environment and Society, ANU. Her expertise lies at the intersection of urban studies, urban science, and urban climate governance. Her PhD at the University of Melbourne (2024) was on “Reimagining Climate Urban Comparison Through A ‘More Global’ Urban Science”, which utilised urban science to identify diverse typologies of cities based on their mitigation actions for socio-spatially diverse cities around the world (including those in the Global South) to facilitate the reimagining of uneven climate networking between cities. Dr. Mokhles also has a background in Architecture and Master’s in Urban Design from Shahid Beheshti University in Iran, as well as an MPhil in Urban Studies from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Mokhles joins the ANU as a member of D. Prof. Xuemei Bai's ARC Laureate Project on "Cities as Transformative Agents in for a climate-safe future". Dr. Mokhles brings a mixed method approach to the project using quantitative analysis (clustering, statistical analysis, and network analysis), in addition to qualitative analysis. She is interested in expanding climate networking that highlights the potential of including diverse cities (including smaller cities, without global city status and cities from the Global South) to identify opportunities for establishing more resilient city networks. Prior to joining the Fenner School Dr. Mokhles has taught multiple subject in urban design and urban sustainability at the University of Melbourne and Monash University and was a research fellow at the university of Melbourne and the Centre for Urban Research (CUR) at RMIT.
