About

Tegan Clark is a PhD Candidate at the Fenner School of Environment and Society and a Research Assistant at the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership. She completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Astrophysics at the ANU.

Tegan takes an interdisciplinary approach to her research topic, which is focussed on the detection of Australian dust storms using satellites. She is aiming to improve the methods used to detect dust storms in Australia using geostationary satellite Himawari-8. Her current project is on the application of a machine learning clustering algorithm to Himawari-8 spectral data across 2019-2021 to detect dust storms. She also considers how Australia can build resilience against and preparedness for dust storms under a changing climate, and how satellite capability can specifically assist disaster resilience in the form of early warning systems.

Outside of her PhD, Tegan has published research on equity and diversity in STEM. She is also an avid science communicator, often found speaking at local events around nipaluna/Hobart and in print, TV and social media. In 2023, she won both the ANU and International Visualise Your Thesis Competitions.
